I have all of the sound files I want to play converted properly (16-bit mono, 11025 project rate, exported to wav) and HLDJ runs in-game, but when I press the 'play audio' key (KP_INS), the sound I have chosen does not play and the mic symbol doesn't even show.

I have voice enabled, etc, and I'm using XP.

I thought it could be something to do with the directory: under the HLDJ game settings, I have my audio directory set as 'garrysmod\garrysmod\addons\HLDJ\Audio', is this OK?

Probably not. Assuming gmod10, after selecting/loading a song, check the directory "\steamapps\account\garrysmod" for the file "voice_input.wav". If it's present, then you'll want to recheck all your voice variables (enter "cvarlist voice_" in console for a listing of all of them); if not, check that HLDJ hasn't reported any errors in-console on start-up or after selecting the song.
