[SOLVED-ish] I can hear own voice, but not the file selected

I'm having a problem in which where I press my play audio key and I'm able to hear myself, just not the intended file.
I'm able to run my game through HLDJ.
Upon starting the game, I notice:
Code: Select all
hldj_cmd_a.cfg successfully created!
HLDJ successfully loaded!
So far so good. I start my server. I type in la to get my song.
Code: Select all
] la
"=" = "Current: (none) Next: targetfile"
"=" = "Directory: F:\HLDJ\Audio"
1. .\ 2. ..\
3. targetfile
I press 3.
Code: Select all
] 3
hldj_cmd_b.cfg successfully created!
"=" = "Loaded--targetfile"
I search in my steam directory for voice_input.wav . Is it there? Yes, one in the SourceMods directory and one in counter-strike, both of which are irrelevant. (I had success with HLDJ on CS1.6 a few months earlier, but after I reinstalled HLDJ, I'm experiencing this problem. Also, my game is on the Half-Life engine, not the Source one, and so the SourceMods voice_input is unrelated.)
So no, there's no voice_input.wav in the game directory.
Voice in all of my games works just fine with my microphone. To be sure the problem wasn't game specific, I tried HLDJ in TF2, CS:S, TFC, and DOD. I encountered the same problem in each. No voice_input.wav.
I'm using HLDJ 1.5.2 running on Windows XP.

Not sure why voice_input.wav exists in SourceMods (unless it was put there manually) but if the game you are running is CS 1.6, then counter-strike \cstrike should be the folder it exists in (which is close to what you have, double-check your search results). You can try 1.5.0, if the problem persists, try testing with the sample audio files. If using 1.5.0 solves the problem be sure to let me know as I'll need to take down 1.5.02 for further testing (although I've tested it extensively on XP and 7).

The good news and the bad news is that it still doesn't work on 1.5.0 under the same circumstances. I didn't run CS1.6 recently, which leads me to believe that the voice_input.wav in /cstrike is there from a previous install. Upon testing on a few more GoldSrc engine games I received the same results; no sound from the file (in this case the sample file), just my own voice.

as I breathe out, yes that is good news...
You have to be certain about the location, "counter-strike" or "cstrike" (the latter one being correct for CS1.6). Delete all your current voice_input.wav's, then try HLDJ with the sample audio files (also, running as administrator may have an effect); after loading a song, do another search and verify the search results by actually going to that folder and playing the voice_input.wav in an audio player.

I've just deleted the two voice_input.wav files located in /cstrike and /sourcemods that we spoke of earlier. I'll run Half-Life through HLDJ (target directory: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\dw-spaz\half-life\valve)
I loaded one of the GoldSrc samples from the homepage into the game, then alt-tabbed and searched for voice_input.wav in steamapps again. There were no files. In fact, for the heck of it, I searched for all files with the .wav extension in steamapps. The only ones I found were two voice_micdata.wav files and two voice_decompressed.wav files, all of which were recent according to the file properties.
But no voice_input.wav anywhere.

And HLDJ responds properly the whole time? If you've gone to the \valve dir to verify there is no voice_input.wav, the only thing left to surmise is that HLDJ is having problems reading/writing your audio file for some reason (permissions, encryption, read/write error, etc); try placing some audio files in the same folder as the game, and temporarily point your audio directory there.
(The wav files you found are those produced by enabling "voice_recordtofile 1" and then recording from your mic, it should be 0 unless toggled manually.)

After pointing my audio directory to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\dw-spaz\half-life\valve and repeated the process with the samples, I could still hear my voice. I have all the permissions that I should have. I have no inkling as to why this would be happening. Are there any sort of microphone/audio settings that I should be aware of?

Somehow, HLSS is working and not HLDJ. This troubles me because from what I've been told the two programs use similar technology. But that's alright; a solution is a solution. Thanks a lot for the help though; I really do love your program, it's just a shame that it wouldn't work this time around. Good luck on further development

Although I can't be certain, since it did work in the past and you can access the file, my last guess would be that your alternate audio directory isn't at default. If you post your hldj.settings I can see if it's indeed a config error, or if not and you're interested in testing a debug version, yours is a corner-case I could use. Otherwise if you're fine with your current solution also so be it.
