HLDJ loaded - some files could not be written ( 1 error ) !
appears in the console on startup, when i try to play audio files (gotton from duke nukem pack on this forum) they all come out incredibly distorted to the point where you can't understand them at all

Your problems are unrelated.
For the file writing error, try deleting any leftover "hldj_...cfg" files from your game's cfg directory. If it persists, make sure autoexec.cfg (to be found in the game's cfg directory) either does not exist or is not set as read-only.
