HLDJ on the fritz

I get the feeling my problem is because of my dual boot status with Win XP and Win 7, and that steam and its games aren't technically installed on Win 7, but I could be wrong.
Last time I was in Windows XP I was able to use HLDJ with no problems at all. I'm now primarily using Win 7 and HLDJ is playing up. In Garry's Mod everything that appears in the console on startup shows up fine, even when HLDJ isn't actually RUNNING! Whenever I do attempt to use HLDJ I can select a file and sometimes it will play a random sound when I press '-' (my play audio button). If I try to select another soundfile it won't change, it will just lock in the same one each time (ex. I select 105 and it plays 62, it will ALWAYS play 62 no matter what I select).
The more common occurrence is that when I press '-' theres no sound. It's like trying to use a microphone that's not plugged in. All that is heard is a slight buzzing sound. I've looked through the Windows 7 Sound Mixer and it seems to be more brutally painful than Windows XP. could there be a setting I need to change under the recording heading?
