1) Does HLDJ launch the game correctly for you?
Screenshot of game loaded through HLDJ here. Also, yes.
2) Does "HLDJ Loaded Successfully" appear in console on starting the game (with no errors)?
Please see screenshot above. The 'can't use cheat' list has always shown up.
3) What is the console output after selecting a song, or issuing other HLDJ commands such as "hldj_next"?
Also revealed in screenshot above.
4) After loading one of the sample audio files, perform a search of your Steam directory (without stopping HLDJ) for the file "voice_input.wav" - does it show up, and if so, where?
Screenshot of voice_input file here. Also, I will add, it wasn't there before - it just suddenly showed up.
5) Does voice normally work for you? If not, or you do not have a mic, have you remembered to set up any applicable options in your operating system and/or the game?
Yes, it works just fine. I also use open-chat, if that should have any effect. x_x;

As you can see, I have the sounds (I only have two) binded to "KP_INS", aka the 0 key on the number pad to the right of the keyboard. However, I hit the button while in-game - nothing happens. Of course, when I decide to talk, I can hear the echo through my headphones. I use a Logitech G35 Headset, with the microphone built in. I know the songs are converted properly, because my friend (whose HLDJ works just fine) converted them and sent them over for me. I'm on a custom-built PC with Windows 7. Stats are below (copied and pasted using http://www.canyourunit.com, because I'm too scatter-brained to go through the old-fashioned process of bringing it up, lol.)

The presence of voice_input.wav means that HLDJ is running and responsive (you can also try navigating directories in-game to confirm this), so the next step is to double-check the server has sv_allow_voice_input_from_file set to 1 if it applies to your game (which I believe it does).
After loading a file, you can also try manually issuing the commands to start playback:

Code: Select all

voice_inputfromfile 1; voice_forcemicrecord 0; voice_loopback 1; +voicerecord
If these work, then double-check your playaudio key is valid; but likely the above will not work, so again, double-check the server settings (best to test on your own server).

What I do find precarious is that a few users have reported that HLDJ is not responsive in the L4D2 DLC, yet it seems to be for you. Is the game you are playing the Left 4 Dead 2 DLC?

Wow, what a swift response. Really made my day. :)

Unless there is a way to go through the directory though the console that I am unaware of due to being a bit of a n00b, I did as you said. (by opening up the game, loading everything up, then testing - same issue - and then minimizing to see if it was still in the directory. It was at that current point in time.) I already believe that it's not necessarily a server issue, because I tried it out in a few different servers with the same friend who converted the files for me, and also has HLDJ - he can play music just fine. I can not. :(

I do have the DLC installed. And yes, I've loaded into all three:

Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 2
Left 4 Dead DLC (It shows up as a separate game in the drop-down list of HLDJ.)

and tested them. I have the same problem for all three - except Left 4 Dead 1 doesn't even have a voice_input.wav file anywhere. In fact, I just checked, and the file that was in L4D2's folder in that image I previously sent over is suddenly gone. :o Then again, I'm guessing that's because I closed out of HLDJ for now, which means that the file must be a temporary file made by HLDJ? Again, I'm a bit of a n00b. :(

Same problem; except with CSS. I tried the above code as well :/.

Yes on both accounts. You can navigate your filesystem from within the console by choosing different directories: for example, selecting the "2. ..\" entry will go up a level. The voice_input.wav is temporarily generated by HLDJ, once it makes its way to the game's folder, the game can play it using the commands listed previously (which is what the play audio key does). To be certain voice_input.wav is in tact, you can play it and see if it's what you expected. To be certain it's in the proper format, use the sample files from the download page. If even those do not play, then it could be a server- or client-side setting preventing it.

Alright, so I went through using the commands like you stated. However, now it isn't even creating the voice_input.wav file at all. I can still merely hear the echo of my voice whenever I try to use the sound file, and it is still saying it's working in the console. I did, however, notice two things though my hunt.

1. There are HLDJ files showing up in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\cfg. They are CFG Files and are listed as, 'hldj_cmd_a', 'hldj_cmd_b', 'hldj_cmd_c'. They DID show up, at one point, in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2_dlc1\cfg file at one point, but they're gone from there now. They've never shown up in the L4D1 files.

2. I decided to check to see if the soundboards were properly formatted for a fifth time. Despite the fact that they were showing up (AND saved, both by me and by my friend) as a 16-bit, they now show up (when opened through Audacity) as '32-bit float'. I've tried to both save and export them into a 16-bit, however, they're still showing up in audacity as 32-bit upon opening.

EDIT: Also, I attempted to download one of the samples from the download page. (The third one, actually.) It immediately listed itself as '32-bit float' upon testing to make sure it was properly converted in Audacity when it didn't play through the game either. Which was VERY odd, considering it came from the site itself.

EDIT 2: AND... here's a screenshot. It includes a full list of the games I have, as well as all of them showing up in the drop-down. The settings of the DLC (they're the same for all of the games, except the game directories which go to where they need to go.), the folder that the voice_input was showing up before, the files in the cfg folder, my list of soundboards, including the sample I downloaded to show they're in the right place, and the sample itself opened in Audacity showing how it's mysteriously showing up as a 32-bit float. Screenshot is here.

If the "hldj_cmd_x.cfg" files are showing up in "left4dead2\cfg" even though you are playing "left4dead2_dlc1", then this is the issue I mentioned earlier from this thread: http://hldj.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=680
edit: you may now also find the updated l4d2 fix on the main downloads page
If the fix there works, then that was the problem (although I'm not sure how voice_input.wav would have been created if HLDJ was truly unresponsive).

The configs you say you saw in "left4dead2_dlc1\cfg" were probably the "hldj_*.cfg" files, the difference being that these are used for input into the game (the others as output). Normally, every other game inputs and outputs configs to the same directory, but for some reason the L4D2 DLC scatters them between two locations.

If you can confirm this is the case and if the fix works, it will be helpful in deciding if this issue affects everyone with the DLC. I need this information before incorporating the fix into version 1.6.0.

As a side note, the bit-depth shown in audacity isn't necessarily the same as the file it outputs. You can run "Render" from the Tracks menu, or check the file properties in Windows to discover the true format.

Alright, so I downloaded the fix on the downloads page. Went through the process of linking up all my songs, so on and so forth. However... :?

Still isn't working. Here is a screenshot of the folders while the game (and the DLC) are running through HLDJ. (NOTE: You can see the game still running in the taskbar down there. )

Left to right, the files are listed as:

1. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead 2 (This is the file that the voice_input had originally shown up in. Now, it isn't showing up at all.)
2. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2
3. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2_dlc1
4. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\cfg
5. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2_dlc1\cfg

UPDATE: I just attempted to copy the sample file over to where the voice_input.wav would originally go, and renamed it as such. However, when I tried to open up the game through HLDJ, and play it (like the thread you suggested states to do) it vanished. o_o Here are the before and after screenshots. After is viewed while the game is still running, with HLDJ.

I'm working blind as I don't have a copy of L4D2, and I think I applied the fix incorrectly, my bad. Try today's a5_l4d2fix.

Also, yes once you start HLDJ, the voice_input.wav will only appear if a song is loaded. The advice I gave in another thread was probably to bypass HLDJ completely, which means not starting HLDJ at all and then copying over voice_input.wav followed by issuing the voice_ commands manually.

Oh, really? I don't know how you could do that without a copy of the game. :( I feel bad now.

Anyway, I DL'd the new one, like you said. Same problem (no music, voice echo), and now something new...

If directory browsing was working before, and voice_input.wav was showing up, then the problem is something else, don't use the "fix".
Steam config directory: c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\platform\config
is interesting, but I'll ignore it for now.

Assuming after you load a file that voice_input.wav shows up, then try the commands I listed earlier to attempt to play it.
