No sound whatsoever

I just got an HP Pavilion with an ATI 4X processor and 8GB RAM (Vista pre-installed) and I can launch games through HLDJ and select a song, but when I try to play music in-game by pressing the button, no sound plays and the "talking" icon doesn't even show. Any thoughts?

UPDATE:
Fixed. I had to set my sound card as a recording device first.
