1 Set of sounds play while another does not

Post by Icct Hedrix »

When I first started converting music and files with Audacity, everything was going alright; sounds were loading, music was playing and everything was just darn peachy. Then I noticed that as I was converting more and more of my sounds and music, less and less of them were playing. Why? I keep converting them like all my others but there are some that don't work. I've taken some screen shots of two sound files, Twist It and Mossels.

Twist it does not work
Mossels does.
I cant think of why for the life of me.
Also I have noticed that when I export them in a 16 bit format then open them up again, the bit format has changed back to 32 bit. I wonder if this is the problem but it happens with both files that do work, and files that don't

Are you using Audacity along with the converting guide linked to in the forum sticky? If so, the problem sounds like tag/metadata in the file. The game won't play wav files that include this data, so make sure that during the exportation process you clear all tag/metadata from the file (Audacity should prompt you with a dialog for this).

As for the 16-bit appearing as 32-bit, this is a common glitch in Audacity. Rest assured, after conversion, if you query the file properties in windows, it should report it as 16-bit. A good tactic (mentioned in the Tips & Tricks forum) to make sure "what you see is what you get" is to perform a "Mix and Render" (located under the Tracks menu) which displays the file as it will appear in its final form in the editor.

Awesome, clearing the metadata fixes the problem. Thanks. I just have a question though. Is the distortion I get from playing some music files limitations of the source engine or HLDJ?

HLDJ doesn't alter the file itself (not yet anyways), so any distortion is a result of the engine limitation and/or the conversion process. There are always little things you can do to squeeze out every last bit of quality, check out the Tips & Tricks forums for more ideas.
