HLDJ Issues in TF2
1) Does HLDJ launch the game correctly for you?
yes
2) Does "HLDJ Loaded Successfully" appear in console on starting the game (with no errors)?
yes
3) What is the console output after selecting a song, or issuing other HLDJ commands such as "hldj_next"?
Host_WriteConfiguration: Wrote cfg/hldj_cmd_j.cfg
Loaded : sample_src
4) After loading one of the sample audio files, perform a search of your Steam directory (without stopping HLDJ) for the file "voice_input.wav" - does it show up, and if so, where?
it doesn't. i suspect this is the problem but even after searching the forums i'm not sure how to resolve it. i've seen some people say that it's something with the OS (i'm running windows 7 64bit) and to check permissions and such but i've yet to see anyone go into enough detail about this to help. i'm not extremely computer savvy so it would help if someone could guide me through a process for checking that i'm allowed to create this file and whatnot.
5) Does voice normally work for you? If not, or you do not have a mic, have you remembered to set up any applicable options in your operating system and/or the game?
last i checked my headset worked perfectly.
when i try to play audio, nothing happens. nothing at all. i've tried a few different solutions, even downloading the latest version of hldj and making sure it was for 64bit. nothing i've tried so far worked. as mentioned above i would guess not having voice_ipnut.wav is the problem, i'm just not sure how to create it.

Re: HLDJ Issues in TF2
I've tested on Win7 64bit, I don't think that is the issue (if you have permissions to install Steam, you should have permission to write to its folder). As it so happens, I have a debug version on hand that might help figure it out. Run it, load a file (or a few), then PM me or upload the hldj.log that is produced:

Host_WriteConfiguration: Wrote cfg/hldj_cmd_j.cfg
Loaded: Amazing horse
Still only activates my mic.
Will an older hldj version work?
Also this is not isolated, it won't work in any game.

And what does your hldj.log say?
You can try 1.5.05 from the downloads page.

OP is in fact correct, it is due a privilege issue, see here: http://hldj.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=739

Re: HLDJ Issues in TF2
ok. i downloaded alpha 7. everything seems fine, it even created voice_input.wav. yet, still, when i press the play audio key (in this case, f3), i get nothing. not even the little bubble to indicate the microphone being on. this is leaving me even more baffled as to what the problem could be.
Re: HLDJ Issues in TF2
If voice_input.wav exists, then you should make sure it is in the right format. If you are using the sample audio, then make sure you are testing on your own server with voice enabled (i.e. voice_modenable 1, voice_enable 1, etc) and sv_voice_allow_input_from_file set to 1.

Re: HLDJ Issues in TF2
if you're saying to make sure voice_input is in the right format, then does it need to be the same format as the audio i'm trying to play (and if it isn't do i need to convert it)? as for what i have in the Audio folder, that's all converted correctly. i know this because hldj was working perfectly before and i could play all this music. i've been testing on servers i create for the most part (and either way i only play on micspam-friendly servers), so i know that everything's enabled and should be working properly. and it still doesn't.
Re: HLDJ Issues in TF2
You need to convert all audio into the proper format for your game as mentioned in the manual. Generally if you are using the sample audio or audio converted via HLDJ's audio converter, they will already be in the proper format. If you suspect your play audio key is not bound, you can enter "hldj_playaudio" in console to activate playback.

Re: HLDJ Issues in TF2
i've got all my audio in the correct format. as i've already mentioned, my music played perfectly fine before. hldj doesn't work, even with the sample audio, and entering "hldj_playaudio" in the console doesn't work either.
Re: HLDJ Issues in TF2
After you load a file, ensure voice_input.wav exists in the "steamapps\team fortress 2" folder (open and play it to make sure it sounds right). Then in console, enter "voice_modenable 1; voice_forcemicrecord 0; voice_inputfromfile 1; voice_loopback 1; +voicerecord". If nothing happens, something is not configured correctly in your client or server.

Re: HLDJ Issues in TF2
ok, so from this reply it would seem something's up with the client or server? i'm not entirely sure what you mean by this. i usually play on servers where others are able to play micspam problem-free, so that couldn't be the issue here. i'm really at a loss as to how to solve this now and so far none of the answers i've received have been entirely helpful or even conclusive as to what my issue is.
Re: HLDJ Issues in TF2
It is a problem with your client or server if voice_input.wav was present after loading a song, played fine in an audio player, but when you entered the above commands in-game, nothing happened. If so, you've eliminated HLDJ from the equation, beyond which I cannot provide much help. I can suggest looking at your game's voice settings, your cvars (enter "cvarlist voice_" in console), Steam support if need-be, etc.

Re: HLDJ Issues in TF2
just so i know, what should the cvars be for hldj to work?
Re: HLDJ Issues in TF2
I'm only certain about a few, such as "voice_modenable 1" "voice_enable 1", "voice_forcemicrecord 0" "voice_codec speex". The spelling may be off, but you'll get the gist when you pull them up in console. Using "cvarlist" or "find" will also list the appropriate defaults and which cvars have been changed, and of course google is another resource.
Tweaking cvars can be like pulling teeth and should be a last resort, even to re-installing. There's no guarantees they are the problem or the solution. First make sure you're 100% sure that you understood and followed everything in this topic.
