HLDJ vs HLSS: Sound Quality

Post by nikavelli »

How is the sound quality of HLDJ versus HLSS? The same? Better?

I have never tried HLSS, but I don't see how there could be any difference, and if there is a difference, HLDJ must be better. HLDJ uses the voice system built right into the source engine. This means that HLDJ must use the same format as the source engine does for sound files, which is admittedly low-quality. But there is no way to to play higher quality sounds through the source engine, unless maybe you modded it, which would be impractical.
In other words: as far as quality goes, there is no better than HLDJ, simply because it isn't possible to be better.

What if you're running a non-source engine based game, like CS 1.6? Does HLDJ still use the voice system built into the source engine, as you put it?

In that case, the GoldSrc engine is used.

Yes, as jxl stated, HLDJ is compatible with both engines. Furthermore, it's built audio converter lets you specify which engine the mp3 needs to be formatted for.
