Unable to Play Music on Team Fortress 2 or Uninstall HLDJ

Post by Edudls »

I have been attempting to use HLDJ to play music through the mic. Since I downloaded HLDJ, I have found that it seems to be working when I start up on the console and load the music, but when I press the key to play the music (F1), it never plays. I am fairly sure this is not due to the server not allowing sound to be played through a file, as I have tried this on multiple servers. I saw on some other forums that some people found that it helped to uninstall HLDJ and reinstall a different version, though when I attempted to do so the computer said that I did not have permission to remove the hldj file. I deleted all other files manually, but it would still not allow me to delete or even move HLDJ from the Program Files. I was wondering if it would be possible to get help on either of these issues.

1) Does HLDJ launch the game correctly for you? Yes, the game starts up with no problems and the console appears as soon as it reaches the main menu screen.
2) Does "HLDJ Loaded Successfully" appear in console on starting the game (with no errors)? This is what appears on the console after I load Team Fortress 2:
maxplayers set to 24

I believe some of that may be due to me having messed around with Team Fortress 2 Dedicated Server, though I can't be sure because I never ran this program before. As you can see, it says there was 1 error, so I don't know if that might be it or not.
3) What is the console output after selecting a song, or issuing other HLDJ commands such as "hldj_next"? This is what the console gives me after I selected the sample_src file:
] 24
Host_WriteConfiguration: Wrote cfg/hldj_cmd_b.cfg
Loaded : sample_src
Here is what I was given after I input the command hldj_next:
] hldj_next
Loaded: Spear Pillar Battle (SSBB)
Host_WriteConfiguration: Wrote cfg/hldj_cmd_c.cfg
This is the correct name of the song next in my list, and there appears to be no apparent problems when entering either of these console commands.
4) After loading one of the sample audio files, perform a search of your Steam directory (without stopping HLDJ) for the file "voice_input.wav" - does it show up, and if so, where? The file does show up in C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\edudls\team fortress 2 folder, and when I play it it does play the same music as sample_src.
5) Does voice normally work for you? If not, or you do not have a mic, have you remembered to set up any applicable options in your operating system and/or the game? I do not have a mic, so I am not sure what applicable options I would need to set up, though I have checked the areas suggested in other posts and checked anything that would make sense to me (Control Panel>Sound>Recording, and on TF2 Options>Voice).

I would like to add that because I was unable to delete the folder with HLDJ and the hldj file itself (the version was the 1.6.0a10 32-bit version), I just renamed that one to "broken" and downloaded the 1.6.0a7 32-bit version in the same folder and changed the shortcut so it opened that instead. I own an Acer Aspire X1300 computer with 2007 Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 with an AMD Athlon(tm) 7450 Dual-Core Processor with 2.40 GHz, 3.00 GB of RAM and a 32-bit operating system. I also have Internet Explorer 8, though I don't think that is the cause of the problem as HLDJ is not crashing, just not playing the music. I also understand that there have been problems with HLDJ running on computers with dual-core processors, but I am not sure if that would be causing a problem either. If you need any more information, just ask and I'll be happy to look for it as long as I know where to find it. I would really like to have this working as soon as possible, so please respond as soon as you are able.

It shouldn't be necessary to re-install HLDJ, although it might have prevented it if you had a file in use. Also, make sure you are testing on your own local server. The 1 file error during start-up can usually be fixed by removing any "hldj_" files that might not have been cleaned up from the last run in your game's 'cfg' directory. But the most likely problem is with #5. Without a mic, the game probably hasn't been configured for voice communication (although usually the console will output something to that effect if that is the case). You seem to be looking in the right places, but I am not familiar with Vista, so you'll need to search around about how to enable recording input, or just keep poking around in there. As noted, some users have reported that simply placing any plug-like object into the recording jack usually triggers the configuration process.

Where exactly is the 'cfg' directory located in the files? After plugging in a USB mic I have been able to get the symbol with my name to show up on screen when I hit the play button, but still no sound is coming through. By the way, you were right, when I tried to delete the one I had been trying to get rid of after I stopped using it and started using the other version, the computer allowed me to delete the file.

In your game directory, which will be listed for each game in Setup. Or just search your entire Steam directory for "hldj_" and remove any files that show up. But as I said, I doubt that's the problem.

Alright, I figured out what I was doing wrong. I didn't realize that the mic button had to be held down to play the audio. I guess it was a stupid mistake, but I really didn't have any idea what I was doing since I had never attempted to even use a microphone on this game before. I do think that changing some of the settings for the voice didn't hurt though.
The plug in the mic thing really helped by the way, thanks.

Mic button shouldn't have to be held. Are you pressing the mic button or the play audio key to play audio files?

I have the exact same problem as Edudls, with about the same stuff on console popping up as him, but for me, holding down the mic button (f) does not do anything. When I press F1 to play the audio, only the exclamation mark inside a bubble pops up, and when I press F1 a second time, the box with my name appears for a split second along with a split second of static. I use FrankenHUD for TF2, is that causing the problem?

I'm not entirely sure what happened, but the problem seems to have fixed itself. I no longer have to hold down the mic button, and I believe that is due to the fact that the settings are set just to have sound go through the mic whenever sound is detected. The sound plays perfectly now, and I no longer have problems with HLDJ. Thank you for the help.
