I downloaded 1.0.0a7 and 1.6.0a10 separately and had the same issues with both: If I start the game (L4D2, through hldj successfully) and enter a map without doing anything people can hear me on my mic like normal. Then if I open the console, select a song ("la", song number, enter, says the song is selected or ready or whatever) and try to play it with my start/stop key I just hear my own voice echoing back at me with about a 1 second delay. No one can hear any music. If I select a song outside of the map, in the game's main menu, then it plays immediately upon entering a map without the command. If I try to turn it off It only mutes the song for me, everyone else still hears it fine. Also, when I do things this way I cannot be heard on my mic which I am told is normal while the player is running. When I select another song and print its name to the chat log it comes up as that new song selected but the first one keeps playing. I can't stop the song, change it, play another instead, or even select one to follow. All of the files I am trying to play have been converted through hldj. Amongst the page of text in the console when first starting L4D2 is "HLDJ Loaded Successfully". After selecting a song it says "Loaded: (whatever the song is)"
1) Does HLDJ launch the game correctly for you?
Yes.
2) Does "HLDJ Loaded Successfully" appear in console on starting the game (with no errors)?
Sure does, halfway through a mess of other stuff that is typical on start-up.
3) What is the console output after selecting a song, or issuing other HLDJ commands such as "hldj_next"?
Host_WriteConfiguration: Wrote cfg/hldj_cmd_b.cfg
Loaded : Alice In Chains - Dam That River
] hldjn
Loaded: Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal
Host_WriteConfiguration: Wrote cfg/hldj_cmd_c.cfg
4) After loading one of the sample audio files, perform a search of your Steam directory (without stopping HLDJ) for the file "voice_input.wav" - does it show up, and if so, where?
When I click the sample audio clips they all play from my Windows Media Player and no such thing as "voice_input" is found anywhere on my computer - as far as I can tell.
5) Does voice normally work for you? If not, or you do not have a mic, have you remembered to set up any applicable options in your operating system and/or the game?
Yes, voice has always worked well.

Re: HLDJ Either echoes own voice or song that cant be stoppe
Update: Problem persists but I am now wondering if the "voice_loopback" command I used to use months ago for game recording in source could be partly to blame? Is there a way to cancel it or restore defaults? I have used "voice_reset_mutelist" with no effect. I even recorded myself running around yelling and announcing when I was hitting the key selected to start and stop songs. When I watched the replay starting the song produced silence on the mic then stopping it allowed me to hear my own gibberish from moments before like the button (F1 which I haven't bound to anything) was toggling "voice_loopback". I changed the start/stop key to "-" and got the same results.

#4 is the problem. Try that step again, and/or post a screenshot showing the contents of your game directory, the contents of it's 'cfg' folder, and the contents of the directory one level above it.
Also, you'll want to try the L4D2 fix version from the downloads page first in case that might address the problem.

Re: HLDJ Either echoes own voice or song that cant be stoppe
Could you clarify exactly what you mean by "game directory" please? Do you mean my SteamApps folder or the source-based games that HLDJ found or the Left 4 Dead 2 folder? I took screenshots of EVERYTHING I thought you might have meant but they all came out badly through human error. I'm willing to take them again - probably will after this - but am hoping to narrow down the scope since I took 14...Renegade wrote:#4 is the problem. Also, tried step 4 again and again under all sorts of conditions and still haven't found "voice_input" anywhere at all. Is it unusual for my computer to just open the sample file in Windows Media Player and not put another file somewhere else? All I do is click the sample link on the website and it plays, no download option or anything.
I've been playing around with source recording again too and no combination of commands/usage of hldj has made a difference. Well, that might not be entirely true: where before I could play a song (not stop it or change to another one though) now I cannot. When I trigger the song to play all I get is myself echoing, no music anymore.
Re: HLDJ Either echoes own voice or song that cant be stoppe
Yes, the directory that shows under Game Path in HLDJ's Setup. There should only be 3 total as per the previous post. Playing from the website is not uncommon and depends on your browser/media player settings, you can usually right-click on the download link and select "Save as" to download the file locally.
Without voice_input.wav being generated, nothing will play in game.
